No. 4 Colgate downs Union, 3-2, behind Biederman’s two points

HAMILTON– Elyssa Biederman tallied two points and Tessa Holk scored a short-handed goal to help lift the No. 4 Colgate Raiders over Union, 3-2, in the Class of 1965 Arena on Friday night. The win halts a two-game losing skid and gives Colgate a three-and-a-half point cushion over Clarkson in the ECAC Hockey regular season standings with three games remaining.

“This was a good display of our team playing for one another and sticking together,” Head Coach Greg Fargo said. “It felt great to face a little adversity there in the third and be on the penalty kill and have Tessa get our group going with a short-handed goal. I thought Murph was tremendous in net tonight and made some key saves at key times for us.”

Despite outshooting the Garnet Chargers 12-3 through the first 20 minutes, the score was knotted at zero heading into the first intermission.

The draw did not hold for long, however, as Colgate tacked on two tallies in the second period. Neena Brick assisted on the first after pushing a two-on-one advantage, connecting with a streaking Biederman who barreled through two Union defenders for her 12th goal of the season.

With five minutes remaining in the middle frame, Danielle Serdachny punched in a goal on an assist from Ava Svejkovsky, who earned her fourth point of the year.

Down by two, Union fought back and started the third by halving the Raiders’ lead. The momentum continued to shift in the visitors’ favor after the Garnet Chargers went on the power play just two minutes later.

Holk was not deterred by the advantage, though, as she calmly poked the puck into a solo rush where she cashed in on the first short-handed goal of her career.

Union was able to again cut the lead to one which led to a hectic two minutes of empty-net action. Hannah Murphy made one of her 24 saves in the final 90 seconds with two shots going wide, sealing Colgate’s 25th win of the season.

The Raiders return to home ice for a bout with RPI on Saturday at 3 p.m.
