#6 Adrian edges #12 Elmira in OT to start the Kickoff Tournament

By Chris Sugar / DIII Hockey News

Game one of the Utica University Women’s Hockey Kickoff Tournament, a game that featured great hockey along with many scoreboard malfunctions.

1st period

The 1st period of play featured some good back-and-forth action between the two ranked teams with no goals to be had by either side, although both had various chances. Elmira led in shots 10-6 and had a debatable whistle blown on them which took a goal off the board just over halfway through the period. A wrist shot deflected off of Adrian goaltender Annie Gilbert’s blocker and the whistle was blown before the live puck was slapped in by an Elmira forward. Both teams battled through the rest of the period with Elmira seeming to get the majority of the good scoring chances.

2nd period

Elmira GOAL! They got on the board early via a pretty tic tac toe goal by #11 McKenzie Schmidt, assisted by #22 Sophie Compeau & #25 MK Boyle at the 2:30 mark to give them the 1-0 lead. Highlight reel worthy.

Elmira would then control possession for about the next 8 or so minutes, having a few scoring chances here and there, Adrian seemed to be on the defensive side for the most part as they lacked any high-quality scoring chances.

At the 12:02 mark, Elmira would be charged with a minor penalty; #8 Payton Nicksic took a seat.

Adrian GOAL! #8 Maya Roy buried a powerplay goal an entire 12 seconds into the powerplay via a wrist shot from the left point, some traffic in front of the net that likely played a role in the goal, a slight deflection that didn’t seem to affect much, but a goal, nevertheless.

Shortly after the game-tying power-play goal, Adrian’s #28 Tia Liscelle picked up a tripping penalty to send the Bulldogs to the penalty kill. No problems arose as kills the penalty without giving up any real scoring chances.

Elmira created more chances coming off deflections after they broke up an Adrian breakaway. Both teams started to go back and forth as if the ice had gotten a little wider, more space seemed to be had by the respective offenses compared to earlier on.

Elmira’s Schmidt has a wide-open shot from the slot and Gilbert makes a swiping save, sending the puck into the glass to keep it tied 1-1.

3rd Period

There was a delayed start as the ice hadn’t fully frozen which caused a few unconventional deflections/skidding of the puck in the first few minutes of the 2nd period. Your typical day in Upstate, NY weather, is 70 and sunny in late October.

Annie Gilbert made five great saves including a wide-open diving save off a rebound fired in by Elmira, keeping the game tied at 1.

Kuehberger makes a 1on1 save from Une Bjelland, both goaltenders seem to be locked in at the moment as neither is getting any chances to rest.

Elmira GOAL! Emily Lenzen scored an unconventional shot from the far right side which caught Adrian’s Gilbert off-guard and let it slip in the net to take a 2-1 lead less than 5 minutes into the final period.

Adrian penalty-tripping 8:12 of the 3rd period, #12 Lindsey Sorrell, Adrian kills the penalty.

Good defense by both teams and not much occurred after the killed Adrian penalty.

Adrian GOAL! #27 Courtney Ben tossed in a puck that Elmira’s Kuehberger seemed to have jammed between her back and the goal which fell in, and Adrian tied it 2-2 with less than 3 minutes remaining. A weird way to find a tying goal between two ranked teams in the last 3 minutes of the game, but here we are, tied 2-2.

The game seems to be getting chippy between the two. Delayed and it seems like the 10th time due to scoreboard malfunctions.

Tied 2-2 at the end 3.

Elmira wins the opening faceoff in the 3v3 period and we’re underway. Both teams going back and forth. Adrian’s #4 Karmen Anderson goes down hard after a collision with #20 Holly Riva in the Elmira left corner of the ice at the 2:19 mark of the period. Anderson is helped off the ice and not putting any weight on the left leg.

The puck squeaks through the grasp of Annie Gilbert and Elmira almost shoves it in the net for the winner, but Gilbert scrambles on top of it to keep it tied.

Elmira had two great setup opportunities and wild saves were made by Gilbert.

Adrian GOAL! With a mere 30 seconds left in overtime, Adrian’s Une Bjelland sped past the Elmira defenders to retrieve the loose puck and scored a backhanded five-hole goal to send Adrian to the championship game vs the #13 Utica Pioneers.
