#6 Utica Pioneers Men’s Hockey takes down #2 Adrian

The Utica Pioneers and Adrian Bulldogs went to overtime for the second game in a row – this time there was a goal.

Utica University and Adrian College are separated by 534 miles, yet they have become one of the most intense rivalries in Division III hockey. Each season, the teams are closely matched up in ranking, record, and drive for the national championship. This season is no different.

After a hard-fought scoreless tie on Friday night at the Adirondack Bank Center, the teams met again on Saturday afternoon. Like the night before, the Saturday afternoon contest was close throughout. This time, however, there was a winner – as first-year player Griffen Barr scored thirty-eight seconds into overtime to give the home team a 3-2 victory.

Adrian’s Riley Murphy opened the scoring at the 3:46 mark of the first period, which would prove to be the only goal of the frame. Ethan Roberts was making his second straight start for the Pioneers and turned aside the other eight shots the Bulldogs took in the first twenty minutes.

The second period was a bit more open, with the teams combining for twenty-two shots. Utica tied the game at 2:28 with a power play goal of their own by Domenick Evtimov. Former Utica Jr. Comet Michael Herrera scored just nine minutes later to give Utica the lead.

Adrian would spoil the good mood at the Adirondack Bank Center less than five minutes later when they scored another power-play goal – this one from Connor May. To no one’s surprise, the team went to the locker rooms for the second intermission tied at two.

An intense third period saw five penalties handed out between the teams but neither could take advantage of their power play opportunities – in that period anyway. Utica would go on the advantage with 1:14 remaining in the third when Adrian’s Jaden Shields took a two-minute interference penalty.

The Pioneers were held scoreless through the end of the third, but forty-six seconds of the power play carried over to the extra frame. Just as that advantage was about to expire, Griffen Barr’s shot made it through traffic, past Adrian goaltender Dershahn Stewart, and into the net for the win.

The Pioneers open their UCHC schedule next weekend at home with two games against Stevenson. For more information about Utica Pioneers hockey, visit
