The #8 Hamilton College Continentals Women’s Hockey Team fell to #3 Adrian 4-1 in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals on Saturday. The loss ended the Continental’s 2023-24 season, as they finished with an overall record of 16-7-6. Here is the recap of the game.

1st Period:

Early on in the period, Hamilton seemed to have a more controlled offense, but Adrian caught on fast, controlling much of the possession after the first five or so minutes passed. The Continentals had a few major chances early in the first few minutes, but Michaela O’Brien made the needed saves for Adrian.

Hamilton had a few deflections in front of the net creating better-than-average chances for themselves, Adrian seemed on the run at times in terms of organization and defending.

Adrian scored their first goal at 11:59, Sydnie Crockett from Saige Biddle to give the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead, in which Hamilton would take a minor penalty shortly after. Adrian added another goal at 13:41 on the powerplay, by Tia Liscelle which made it 2-0, doubling the Bulldog lead early.

In a quick turn of events in the last part of the opening period, Hamilton would score, cutting the lead in half, and making it 2-1. Claire McGennis on the rebound effort put it in the back of the net.

The period would end with an Adrian penalty with just under two minutes remaining in the period, #3 Paige Pomerleau, the period would end with twelve seconds left on the kill.

Adrian leads 2-1 at the end of the 1st.

2nd Period:

Adrian killed the remaining penalty they incurred at the end of the 1st period, the game returned to even strength and stayed even for the first few minutes as neither team got much of anything going outside of one chance in the slot from the Continentals.

Adrian had Hamilton on the ropes for about three to four minutes midway through the period. Adrian controlled the puck and created a few good chances which Teagan Brown stopped from entering the net.

Hamilton remained on the ropes but created a close chance that crept by the right post and stayed out. Adrian kept on the attack and didn’t let up, always seeming faster on most parts of the ice.

Adrian’s #28 Tia Liscelle added another goal to her statline, making the Adiran lead 3-1 at the 17:49 mark of the 2nd period. The Bulldogs have owned this period, controlling most of the possession and shots. Noticeable differences have been physicality, Adrian’s been physical during play and after the whistle, flying to the puck, and holding it in the zone.

Adrian leads 3-1 after 2 periods.

3rd Period:

Adrian had a few chances early, maintaining the control they sustained in the prior period.

Adrian had a goal reviewed and taken off the board with 13:29 left in the period, which would’ve made it 4-1. Instead, it remained 3-1.

Hamilton’s Claire McGennis took a slashing penalty midway through the period, which resulted in a Bulldog goal by #4 Karmen Anderson, making it a 4-1 Adrian lead with ten minutes left in the game.

Teagan Brown of Hamilton made plenty of big saves in this period, despite the scoreboard being 4-1, she’s played a fairly good game overall.

Hamilton called a timeout with six minutes left in the game, trying to rest up and find some offense.

Tia Liscelle took a hooking penalty with 4:47 left in the 3rd, the penalty was killed off quite routinely, and Hamilton did not get any chances.

Adrian finishes it off after Hamilton doesn’t pull the goalie. Adrian wins 4-1 and will face undefeated #1 UW-River Falls who’s 29-0-0 after defeating #3 Gustavus 2-1 earlier today for the fourth time this season. Adrian and UWRF played earlier this year in River Falls, the Falcons won 7-5.
