Central New York college hockey players in the SPHL

Several former Central New York college hockey players are playing professionally in the SPHL this season.

Most hockey fans have heard of the NHL, AHL, and the ECHL. The three leagues work in tandem to provide a support and development system for the NHL teams the AHL and ECHL teams are affiliated with.

There is another professional league based in the southern United States that several former Central New York college players call home – the SPHL.

The SPHL, or Southern Professional Hockey League, is celebrating its twentieth season. It is made up of ten teams that play a fifty-six-game regular season and compete for the league’s ultimate prize – the President’s Cup. It is considered to be an “A” level league.

The SPHL has no formal affiliation agreements with any other leagues, but several of its players have played in the ECHL and on occasion, the AHL. One of its players has even made it all the way to the NHL, that being goaltender Scott Darling.
