Central New York + North Country well represented at PWHL Draft

Central New York and North Country women’s college hockey programs had a great day at the 2023 PWHL Draft.

The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) held its first-ever draft on September 18, 2023, and the Central New York/North Country region was very well represented.

The PWHL comprises six franchises in New York, Boston, Minnesota, Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa. It was formed earlier this year after the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF) and Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association (PWHPA) folded, clearing the way for the birth of the Professional Women’s Hockey League.

Prior to the draft, each of the six franchises in the Professional Women’s Hockey League was allowed to sign three free agents each. To be eligible for the draft, players must have declared themselves eligible by September 3, 2023. This applied to not just players from the NCAA, but players from the former PHF and PWHPA as well.

The 2023 PWHL draft was fifteen rounds long, with each team getting one pick per round in a “snake draft” format (a term no doubt familiar to fantasy sports enthusiasts). Minnesota held the first overall selection, followed by Toronto, Boston, New York, Ottawa, and Montreal. The Professional Women’s Hockey League season is scheduled to begin in January 2024.

Locally, the region’s four Division I hockey programs saw graduates of their programs get drafted. The Clarkson Golden Knights led the way with eight of their players being selected – including the number four, five, and six overall picks.

Here’s a breakdown of the selections from Colgate, Clarkson, St. Lawrence, and Syracuse. Special thanks to https://thedailyfaceoff.com for the thorough analysis of the Professional Women’s Hockey League Draft.
