Morrisville is still in search of their first victory this season after falling 5-1 to the Plattsburgh Cardinals on Wednesday night.

The Morrisville Mustangs Men’s Hockey Team (0-1-0, 0-0-0 SUNYAC) opened their 2023-24 SUNYAC schedule on Wednesday night by hosting the fourth-ranked Plattsburgh Cardinals. It was also the home opener for the Mustangs, who celebrated “Mustang Blackout” night adorned in their black-based and green uniforms.

The Cardinals would be a massive test for the Mustangs. Plattsburgh entered the game with a record of 2-0-0 and is ranked fourth in the latest USCHO poll. They are also tied for the third most potent offense in Division III, as they have averaged six goals per game so far this season.

Wednesday night’s game would mark the SUNYAC opener for the Cardinals as well.

Plattsburgh jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first period with goals seventy-four seconds apart. Colin Callanan scored his first goal of the season when he drove into the Morrisville zone and beat Mustangs goaltender Garrett Boyonoski with a shot from the right circle. Shortly thereafter, Aaron Catron slid a cross-slot pass to Bennett Stockdale for a tap-in goal.

The Mustangs got the game’s first power play soon after the Stockdale goal. Although they did not score on it, they used it as a springboard to apply pressure on the Cardinals. The first period ended with the score 2-0.

Morrisville continued to apply pressure early in the second period, but it was Plattsburgh that got the next goal. The Cardinals came into Wednesday night’s game with the best power play in Division III (60%), and at the 12:35 mark, they used it to extend their lead. Boyonoski made an aggressive save on Luk Jirousek in front of his net, but Jirousek was able to put the rebound in.

Four minutes later, the Cardinals scored again when a scramble in front of Boyonoski led to Joshua Belgrave putting the puck in an open Morrisville net. The score was 4-0 in favor of the visitors after forty minutes of play.

An already physical game became really physical in the third period, as a total of six penalties were handed out between the teams. A five-minute major for checking from behind by Morrisville’s Jacob Black led to Plattsburgh’s fifth goal of the night. Ryan Bonfield sent a cross-ice pass to Paul Bryer, who dented the twine with a one-timer.

The Mustangs broke the shutout at the 13:02 mark of the third with a power play goal of their own. A Plattsburgh turnover in their own zone would prove costly. Chris Mott roofed a loose puck past Cardinals goaltender Jacob Hearne to make the score 5-1. That would conclude the scoring and Plattsburgh skated away with the victory.

The Mustangs next welcome SUNYAC rival SUNY Potsdam to the IcePlex on Saturday night at 7 p.m. For more information about Morrisville Mustangs hockey, visit
