Goaltender Garrett Boyonoski made forty-one saves in Morrisville’s upset victory.

The Morrisville Mustangs (4-15-0 overall, 2-9-0 SUNYAC) got exactly what they needed on Wednesday night – a win. Going into their game against the Cortland Red Dragons (11-6-2 overall, 7-3-1 SUNYAC), the Mustangs were mired in a seven-game losing streak. With their 2-1 victory against their SUNYAC rival, that streak is no more.

Morrisville not only got a much-needed win, they got a measure of revenge. The Red Dragons edged the Mustangs 3-2 in their first meeting at Cortland on November 12.

Mustangs goaltender Garrett Boyonoski stopped all fifteen Red Dragons shots in the first period. His Cortland counterpart, Ronan Mobley, turned aside all five shots he faced in a scoreless opening frame. With just under twelve minutes remaining in the second period, the visitors got the game’s first goal on Domenic Settimo’s power-play goal. It was the only goal of the period, and the teams went into the second intermission separated by just one goal.

That deficit was erased just 1:13 into the third period when Mustangs forward Stevie Gerbis scored his fifth goal of the season. The Red Dragons outshot the Mustangs 12-5 in the third, but Boyonoski stood tall and kept them at bay. The home team got a goal from sophomore forward Jacob Black with 3:17 remaining and skated away with the victory.

The Mustangs next travel to Oswego for a SUNYAC game against the Lakers on Saturday night. For more information about Morrisville Mustangs hockey, visit
