Morrisville Women’s Hockey looks to shock the SUNYAC

The Morrisville Mustangs Women’s Hockey Team (12-13-0 overall, 7-11-0 SUNYAC) kicked off the John Briggs era by qualifying for postseason play for the first time since 2019-20. Briggs took over the head coaching duties this off-season when Melissa Lomanto took an assistant coach job at Utica University. They are the fourth seed in the SUNYAC Tournament and will face the number one seed Plattsburgh Cardinals (21-3-1 overall, 16-2-0 SUNYAC). The game will be this Saturday in Plattsburgh at 3:00.

Morrisville enters Saturday’s contest as massive underdogs to the high-powered Cardinals. It’s something, however, that does not bother Briggs and his team.

“We have been the underdogs throughout the year so it’s nothing that we aren’t used to,” Briggs said. “Since the beginning of the year, we have been counted out and we continued to have fun and play free and that’s what we are going to do this weekend, not change a thing”.

The Mustangs bench boss is also impressed with the strides his team has made since the beginning of the season.

I could not be more proud of the girls this year. The growth that we have had as both a program and individually has been nothing short of phenomenal. We contribute a lot of this growth to not only hard work but the strong culture we have created which allowed us to become a family. We faced a lot of adversity this season and we fought through it as a collective group which played a big part in the on-ice success we have enjoyed.

Allie Davidson is the Mustangs leading scorer with 23 points, and her team will need her on Saturday against the Cardinals. The junior forward had a very strong close to the season, registering at least one point in the last four games and totaling two goals, five assists, and seventeen shots in that span.

Alana McDonald and Hailee Easson round out the top three scorers for the Mustangs.

All three Morrisville goaltenders started games this season. Maggie Jones led the way with 13, followed by 10 from Elizabeth Timby, and 4 by Emma Plett.

The conference tournament matchups for CNY Division III teams

Plattsburgh won all three regular-season meetings between the teams and is ranked fourth in the latest USCHO Women’s Division III poll. Defense is the Cardinals calling card, as they are in the top ten nationwide in goals allowed per game. Goaltender Lilla Nease is a big part of that defense. In 21 starts this season, she has compiled a record of 17-3-1 with a 0.98 GAA, 0.951 save percentage, and seven shutouts.

On offense, the Cardinals are led by forward Julia Masotta, who has 32 points this season. First-year forward Zsofia Pazmandi leads the team in goals with 15, with only three of them coming on the power play.

“Obviously they are a great team who have had a lot of success but we are excited for this opportunity,” Briggs said about the SUNYAC regular season champions.

Win or lose on Saturday, Coach Briggs is extremely proud of his team, saying “Regardless of the outcome of Saturday’s game we are proud that we have proven over the course of the season that we deserve to be here. Anything can happen in a one-off game but to be in this position we have accomplished more than anyone thought we would”.
