New Jersey Devils assign one to the Utica Comets, recall another

Forward Max Willman was assigned to the Utica Comets on Monday by the New Jersey Devils, and they recalled goaltender Akira Schmid.

Max Willman is returning to the Utica Comets the New Jersey Devils announced on Monday.

Willman, signed in the offseason after spending the previous three seasons with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (AHL) and Philadelphia Flyers, has played 13 games for the Devils this season. In those games, he totaled one goal, one assist, two PIM, and was a +1. In 63 NHL games, Willman has five goals and three assists.

In twenty games for the Comets in 2023-24, he has nine goals, seven assists, 10 PIM, 61 shots, and is a -7. When in the lineup, he is a key part of the Utica offense.

The Devils made a second transaction involving the Comets on Monday, recalling goaltender Akira Schmid. The 23-year-old started the season with the Devils but was assigned to Utica on December 28th. He has a record of 3-5-4 with a GAA of 3.58 and a 0.885 save percentage with the Comets this season.

Devils goaltender Vitek Vanecek is listed as day-to-day with an illness.

Schmid was drafted by the New Jersey Devils in the fifth round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. He is currently on an entry-level contract, and per he is still waiver exempt.
