The Oswego Boys Varsity Hockey Team will host its annual Teal Night to raise awareness of ovarian cancer on Tuesday night.

“No one fights alone” is a phrase that has special meaning to the Oswego community and beyond. For the Oswego Buccaneers Boys Varsity Hockey Team, it is a phrase that is the centerpiece of a very special night.

Since 2018, the team has held an annual “Teal Night”, in which they raise awareness for the battle against ovarian cancer. The 2023 edition of the game will take place on December 19 at Crisafulli Rink, also known as “The Fort”. For the game, the Buccaneers will don their special teal jerseys (pictured above), and a pregame ceremony will be held before the game. There will also be a table set up with information about the disease and how to combat it.

The inspiration for Teal Night

Although the Teal Nights began in 2018, the story that inspired the games began in 2015. Mary Gosek was in a battle against ovarian cancer and started a non-profit organization called Peaceful Remedies. The purpose of the organization is described on its website as follows.

Founded in 2015 in Oswego, NY, Peaceful Remedies is improving the healing experience for those impacted by life-altering illnesses by bringing holistic options of therapy and support to individuals in a safe and peaceful environment.  Through our events & programs, we provide support services that complement treatments, support caregivers, patients, and their families.

If Mrs. Gosek’s name sounds familiar, it could be because she was the wife of long-time Oswego St. Lakers Men’s Hockey Head Coach Ed Gosek. The Lakers bench boss has a connection to the Buccaneers as well, as he played for the team in 1979-80.

Although her husband is well-known throughout college hockey circles, Mary Gosek became a hero in Oswego due to her work with Peaceful Remedies. Mrs. Gosek passed away in 2017, but her legacy continues through her organization. Peaceful Remedies continues its mission of helping people who are impacted by life-altering illnesses. As for the game itself on Tuesday night, the Buccaneers will host Section III rival the Auburn Maroons. Oswego enters the game with an overall record of 4-2. Auburn is still searching for its first win of the season with a record of 0-6. The pregame ceremony honoring Mary Gosek will begin at 6:45 pm, and the puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

Special thanks to Oswego Buccaneers Assistant Coach Dominick Donabella for providing much of the information for this article.
