The UCHC makes big changes for the 2024-25 season

The UCHC announced on Wednesday that SUNY Brockport and SUNY Geneseo are joining the conference for the 2024-25 season. It appears that isn’t the only change.

The UCHC (United Collegiate Hockey Conference) is making big changes starting in the 2024-25 season. These changes will strengthen their conference but adversely affect another one as well.

In an announcement released on Wednesday, the UCHC officially added the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles and SUNY Geneseo Ice Knights to its men’s hockey side of the conference beginning with the 2024-25 season. The press release mentioned the men’s programs from both schools, as neither school has a women’s hockey program. How or if this announcement will affect the women’s side of the UCHC remains to be seen.

Brockport and Geneseo are coming to the UCHC from the SUNYAC – a conference that began its ice hockey sponsorship in 1992. Last season, Geneseo finished with an overall record of 18-7-2-0, and third in the SUNYAC with an 11-5-1-0 mark. They finished just outside of the top fifteen in the final USCHO Mens Division III poll of 2022-23 but did receive twelve votes. The Ice Knights also made it all the way to the Division III National Championship game in 2022 before falling to Adrian College.

The 2022-23 season was a tough one for Brockport, but they have a history of success as a program. The Golden Eagles had an overall record of 10-15-0-1 and were 5-11-0-0 within the conference.

Locally, the Utica Pioneers belong to the UCHC and have been a dominant force in the conference since its inception in 2017. Head Coach Gary Heenan’s teams have taken four conference championships in the league’s six-season history.

‘It’s certainly exciting to welcome long-established programs with traditions of winning and fan bases”, Heenan said about the arrival of Brockport and Geneseo into the UCHC. “Exchanging six to seven-hour league trips for two hours is a huge positive.”

Other changes are coming

Wednesday’s press release by the UCHC did more than announce the arrival of Brockport and Geneseo. It also stated the Men’s side of the conference would be made up of eight programs beginning in 2024-25. These programs are Brockport, Chatham, Geneseo, Manhattanville, Nazareth, Neumann, Utica, and Wilkes. This means current UCHC Men’s Hockey members Stevenson, King’s, Arcadia, Alvernia, and Lebanon Valley apparently will not be returning for the 2024-25 season.
