Utica Pioneers Men and Women complete weekend sweeps

The seventh-ranked Utica Pioneers Men’s Hockey Team and the ninth-ranked Women’s Team completed their weekend sweeps on Saturday. Both teams played UCHC opponents.

The ninth-ranked Utica Pioneers Women’s Hockey Team returned from their end-of-semester break with a trip to Reading, Pennsylvania for a two-game set against the Alvernia Golden Wolves. Alvernia entered the series with an overall record of 8-2-1 and a 6-1-1 mark in the UCHC.

Utica took game one on Friday night by a score of 3-1. Erica Sheaffer scored two goals, and Kaci Ryder registered a goal and an assist to lead the Pioneers. Angela Hawthorne made twenty-one saves in net for Utica to pick up the win.

On Saturday afternoon, the Pioneers cruised to a 4-1 victory to finish the weekend sweep. Carolyn Whitney led the way with two goals and an assist (her first goal was shorthanded). Angela Hawthorne only needed to make thirteen saves to pick up her second win of the weekend.

The Pioneer’s overall record now stands at 11-1-2. Their 8-0-2 record in the UCHC puts them in first place in the conference. They remain on the road next weekend as they face another UCHC foe in the Stevenson Mustangs on Friday and Saturday.

Utica Pioneers Men

The seventh-ranked Utica Pioneers men’s Hockey Team returned from their end-of-the-semester break with a pair of games against UCHC rival the Manhattanville Valiants. The Valiants entered the two-game set in Utica with an overall record of 3-5-1 and were 3-2-1 in the UCHC.

Friday night’s game took place at the Pioneer’s “home away from home”, the Utica University Nexus Center. The change of venue made no difference to the Pioneers, as they took game one 6-2. The home team had six different goal scorers, while first-year players Aiden Hughes, Andrew Della Rovere, and Drake Morse led the scoring with a goal and assist. each. Bryan Landsberger made thirty-two saves to pick up the win in net for the Pioneers.

The teams met again on Saturday night, this time in the Pioneers normal home at the Adirondack Bank Center. Different venue, same result for Utica, as they took game two by a score of 7-4. Drake Morse led the way, registering one goal and two assists. Eric Vitale (one goal and one assist), John Gutt (one goal and one assist), Shane Murphy (two assists), and Domenick Evtimov (two assists) each had multi-point games as well. Morse, Vitale, and Matt Wood also had goals on Friday night.

Utica goaltender Ethan Roberts made thirty saves to pick up the win.

The Pioneers overall record now stands at 8-2-3. They are in first place in the UCHC with a conference record of 7-0-1. They travel to Neumann next weekend for two conference games against the Knights on Friday and Saturday.
