Step one toward the UCHC Championship for the Utica Pioneers Women’s Hockey Team is complete.

The second-seeded Pioneers defeated the seventh-seeded Chatham Cougars 5-0 on Wednesday afternoon in the Quarterfinals of the UCHC Tournament. Five Pioneers recorded goals, while Angela Hawthorne made 10 saves to pick up the shutout victory.

The time is now for the Utica Pioneers Women’s Hockey Team

Utica outshot Chatham 14-4 in the first period, but the goal lights stayed off. The Pioneers broke through with two goals in the second period. The first one came on the power play when Erica Sloan ripped a shot from the left circle past Chatham goaltender Lindsey Batz and in. Just over five minutes later, Sydney Mintz burst down the right side of the Cougars zone and spotted Jordan Kowalski, who was charging down the slot. Kowalski took a centering pass from Mintz and beat Batz with a wrist shot to give the home team a 2-0 lead they took into the second intermission.

While the visitors kept the game close through two periods, the Pioneers put the game away late in the third with three goals. With 6:32 remaining, Callie McLaughlin made the score 3-0 when her shot from the point was tipped by a Chatham defender and into the net. 18 seconds later Kaci Ryder wired a shot from the left circle past Batz into the top of the net to extend the Pioneer lead to four.

With three and a half minutes remaining, the Cougars pulled Batz for an extra skater in a desperate attempt to get on the scoreboard. It backfired, as Maggie Rylott took a pass from Carolyn Whitney and deposited the puck into the empty cage for the fifth and final goal of the afternoon.

The Pioneers outshot Chatham 50-10 for the game.

Utica now advances to the Semifinals of the UCHC Tournament and will host a home game on Saturday. Their opponent is yet to be determined as of this writing. For more information about Utica Pioneers Hockey, visit https://uticapioneers.com.
